Firearms Safety Course
This class meets the mandatory requirement for purchasing or transferring one of the specified semi-auto firearms. You can view the list of state specified semi-automatic firearms here.
Which course is right for you?
If you have a Hunter’s Safety card, you need only take the 4 hour Firearms Safety Course in order to move to the next step in the purchasing process. If you do not have a Hunter’s Safety card, you will be required to take the full 12 hour class. The 12 hour class is split over 2 days.
WHAT does the purchase process look like
Step 1
Apply with CPW
Your first step is to set up your account with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and submit your application. You can do that here:
Step 2
background check
You must pay to get a background check done through a 3rd party. You can request the 3rd party vendor list from your local sheriff’s office.
Step 3
Submit paperwork to the sheriff’s Office
Take a copy of your CPW application from step 1, your background check from step 2, and a government-issued ID to your local sheriff’s office along with $52. If you are verified, you will receive an eligibility card.
Step 4
Take a firearms safety course
Bring your ID and your Eligibility Card with your to take your firearms safety course! You must pass the written test with a 90% or better. Once successfully completed, your grades will show in the firearms safety system in 3 business days.
Step 5
purchase your firearm
Go to the FFL of your choice to purchase your firearm. Your eligibility will be good for 5 years .
